This image is a palladium print, an antique photographic process. The emulsion is hand mixed and painted on the paper surface. When dry it is ready to be exposed to UV light. It is a contact printing process, meaning that the negative is directly placed on the sensitized paper, exposed and then developed. Therefore the print size is the same as the negative size. It reveals a beautiful variance of brown tones, giving an antique look to the image. Palladium is a highly archival method of printing and allows the ability to print on different surfaces. I chose to print on Bienfang, a thin tissue-like paper mostly used in graphic design. This surface quality allowed a very delicate texture. When added to the content of the images which deal with family history and biological origins, it reveals the sense of a past that I am trying to both discover and reveal.
