Inupiat Eskimo artist LARRY AHVAKANA will open a solo exhibition of his newest creations in marble, bone, wood, metal and glass with a reception at Jeffrey Moose Gallery on Friday, October 16th. He will exhibit an array of wooden masks representing sacred animals and hunter figures, shamanic "transition" carvings, sculptures in marble and bronze as well as plaster models of works to be bronzed. A small group of woodcut prints will also be on display.
Mr. Ahvakana recently finished commissions for two major collections of Native American Art: in 1997 he completed and installed a multimedia diarama of an Inupiat whaling party for the newly redesigned Burke Museum at the University of Washington and this year, 1998, he completed and installed a large Man/Raven sculpture for the stunning Pequot Museum and Research Center in Mashantucket, Connecticut, a brand new facility. His exhibition history reaches back to 1974 and includes showings at the Field Museum in Chicago, The Heard Museum in Phoenix, The Smithsonian Institute, the U.S. Capital Rotunda and The Seattle Art Museum.
