Father and son artists Jeffrey and Elias Moose.
JEFFREY MOOSE is known for his work as owner of Jeffrey Moose Gallery, curator of the Painteld Table Restaurant and the Alexis Hotel, and co-founder of the former cooperative Net Contents Gallery on Bainbridge Island. But his career has continually involved the production of art in many media. A figurative representational artist for the majority of his career, starting with figure drawing classes at The Corcoran Museum at age 12, his aesthetics and conceptual concerns took a major turn after graduating from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago in 1984.
Mr. Moose moved to Santa Cruz, California and continued to print his own lithographs at The University of California, Santa Cruz and to create large images in pastel. During this period, a fascination with high resolution photographs from deep space produced a body of paintings, still representational, which inspired most of the following 2D efforts to date.
Working on large rolls of sturdy printmaking paper, Mr. Moose works many layers of pastel into underdrawings which are then reduced by applying a background (most often black) and then creating various areas of activity and solid color blocks. The resulting abstractions, which Moose describes as "...manifestations of spiritual energy from animals and plants, particularly those of the Olympic Peninsula..." are striking compositions which simultaneously suggest the depths of the Universe, a visit to the subconscious and hint of influences from Native art forms.
"Eye of The Dosewallips" suggests three separate realities: a large fish like form, in reds and yellows, rises from the center of the picture plane, predominately black. The form itself acts as a window into another space, one which is fiery and agitated compared to the quietness of dark space. The bottom of the scene is filled with watery blue, swirling with flashes of red from which the fish erupts. Despite this description, every viewer seems to see something different in the strange world.
The pastels, varying in size from 48"x48" to 30"x22", are accompanied by pastel and pencil works from Mr. Moose's son, ELIAS, whose mother is also an artist. Elias shows all of the talent exhibited by his mother and father and continues into his own fresh territory by experimenting with unusual color and textural relationships.
