"In the Spirit of the Dance"
recent work by Nigerian artist Chidi Okoye

June 4th to July 26th, 1999
Opening reception Saturday, June 5th, 6-8 pm

"In the Spirit of Dance" is an exhibition of recent paintings, drawings and prints by CHIDI OKOYE, award winning Nigerian painter, sculptor and poet. The exhibit explores the expression of body movements in response to the echoes of drums in the traditional Igbo society. This collection not only depicts the unique culture of the Igbos, one of the major tribes of Nigeria, but has a powerful message of community life for the new millennium. When asked about the title of the series, Chidi responded, "Wouldn't it be nice to step into our relationships, jobs, neighborhood and our homes 'In the Spirit of Dance?'"

Now residing in Vancouver BC, Chidi Okoye has proven to be a highly accomplished philosophical artist whose colors and images have won the hearts of collectors all over the world. He has participated in numerous international exhibitions in Europe, Africa and North America. He was the Sundiata 1999 Best Show award winner and two time Sundiata Poster Design Artist, as well as winner of 1999 Co-op Radio Poster Competition, Vancouver BC.
