Mwoyo Arts' Second Annual Silent Auction of Shona Stone Sculpture commences September 12. The auction includes the gallery's entire collection of Shona Stone Sculpture, most notably pieces by internationally renowned artists David Mutasa and Wilfred Hamadziripi. Auction bids may be submitted to Mwoyo Arts between September 12 and September 21, 1997 in person or by phone. A list of minimum bids is available upon request. Successful bidders will be notified on September 23. Ten percent of the auction proceeds will be donated to a stone sculptors' collective in Zimbabwe.
The Shona Stone Sculpture of Zimbabwe is a dynamic contemporary art form based on traditional themes and spirit legends of the ancient African culture. Newsweek magazine declares that "Shona sculpture is perhaps the most important new art form to emerge from Africa in this century." (9/87) Early Shona Stone Sculpture collectors include Prince Charles and the Rockefellers.
